I STRONGLY suggest you go to the link that RayIN has provided,and read the whole thing. This has been discussed many times so maybe a search of the archives is in order?
The unleaded fuel of the 70's is NOTHING like the gasoline of today,which already contains additives to compensate for the lack of tetraethyl lead. The lead was added to increase the octane rating,NOT to lubricate the valves,although this was a useful side effect of the lead.
