Most solenoids have four wires to them. They are basically a heavy duty switch. The heavy wire from the battery will go on one of the large posts. A smaller wire from it goes to the ignition switch to power it, lights etc. Another wire from the switch will attach to a small terminal or screw on the solenoid, when energized, it will cause the solenoid to close so that power will flow through the other large wire to the starter. If you disconnect all the small wires and leave the big ones on,connect the battery and it starts, the solenoid is bad. Beyond this, you might need to get a friend to look at it who knows a little about automotive electrical.
