The weight of the belt dictates how much power can be transmitted by the belt. There were 4 ply, 6 ply, 8 & 10 ply belts. Heavier belts and wider belts didn't need as much length. A 10 inch wide 6 ply belt had to be fairly long to transmit the power needed to run a big thresher while a short belt had to be very tight to run and not slip. I'm sure the fire risk was a consideration also.
