I take care of several trailers at work and have learned how to eliminate a lot of problems. Since your wiring looks old it probably is so.... rip it out and rewire. In your new wiring, ground EVERYTHING through the wiring. Everywhere the wiring splits (brakes, tail lights) put the splices in a weatherproof box. Soldered splices are best with sealer then heat shrink tube. Use led lights, they outlast incandescents. If you stay with bulbs grease the contacts or solder the wires to the bulbs. The bulb outlast the contacts which get corroded and cause poor electrical contact and corrosion goes up the wires into the bulb destroying the vacum in the bulb.
