Ludwig...good man indeed, he is. I suppose ground water can be a problem. I don't know about around here. Most folks I've talked to who have concrete floors poured or who pour them apparently don't use it. We're in really dry country - 7" of rain a year, and the only thing that keeps the desert back is irrigation from the Columbia River. I know the soil has moisture in it, but when we went down 4 ft for the utilitiy lines to the barn, and when we excavated down about 3 ft on one side to provide the flat surface for the barn, there wasn't a lot of moisture once we got below a foot or so - it was hard, dry clay. Even in that first foot, it sure doesn't compare to real soil, though my regular spread of manure is helping! :) Our excavator's wife (they also buy/sell topsoil), when I mentioned the word "humus" (sp?) said that we really don't have the stuff around here. Thanks for your comments...nice to hear back from somebody else that we did it right. I'll pass the compliment on to my friend who did the concrete.
