Spend the money the 8V battery costs on repairing the 6V system. The battery cables should be a minimum of 2 gauge, "0" gauge is the factory original size, seems most everyone uses the wimpy 6 gauge made for 12V systems. The years of rust, paint, grease severely restricts the proper flow of current to the starter. Clean and reattach all connections. I rerouted the ground cable to attach to a starter mounting bolt and the difference was quite apparent. You'll save the battery cost as well as the cost of having the generator reset to supply enough electricity for it.
