The ports in the cylinder of GM diesels are for intake only. Air from the blower is blown into an "air box" that surrounds the cylinders lower portion and when the piston uncovers the ports air is blown into the cylinder blowing exhoust out the 2 or 4 exhaust valves at the top. It is the same for all, no matter what size. I saw the same system on 268 and 278 series engines that were on the navy ship I was on. And the 278s has a bore and stroke of maybe 7s10". the blower was on the front of the engine not the side, but it worked the same as on 71s.
