Manuals are available from the John Deere dealer. I bought a parts manual for a model L a few years ago, it seems like it was around $20, but probably more. You can use the manual for finding the correct casting numbers when looking for replacement parts. The Herculese engine did have the bell housing bolted on as said in a previous post. The John Deere copy had the bell housing cast onto the block, and had provision for a starter motor at the top of the flywheel if the starter wasn't used there was a cover over the opening. I don't think the Herculese had a provision for a starter.
