I'm not wanting to offend any of the other people who posted but if I had 1 acre or 10,000 I wouldn't have another gas tractor if somebody gave it to me. There's not much fiddling around on a diesel, they run or they don't. They don't "don't" very often but it's not cheap when that happens. They are safer, economical, dependable, and there's "nothing like the smell of diesel in the morning". With that said I've had 8Ns, 601's, 801's, and a 4000 (all Fords) gas. Plus a gas 3010 and 4030 JD, and a 140 IH. All good tractors, I just like diesels better. Seemed like I was always fiddling with the points, dryng moisture out of the distributor cap, or putting gas in them. I get tired of putting gas in my lawnmower. With my diesels I change the oil every 150 hrs, fuel filters 1x per year, and that's it for about 4000 hrs.

I think realistically one of the small Fords (1710 maybe, not really the size I study much) would be a good choice. You want 3 point hitch, independent or at least live w/ 2 stage clutch PTO, and a 2 way hydraulic remote. If you want to "pretend" no use not getting all the stuff.

I would think a 2000, 3000, or 3600 Ford diesel would be your best choice in your small but full size line. Not to offend anyone else but I would get an 8 speed transmission, not a SOS. Should be able to find one of these for $5000 or so. I also prefer 1973's or later, just seem that after about 30 years you start to get some wear related problems that I don't like fooling with.
