You can't rate an engine based simply on the HP. It's more a HP vs torque vs RPM that lets you know what you have.
Your friends 800cc motor may have alot of rated HP, but in order to obtain it, he's probably turning 6000 RPM, but with such a small bore, and a short stroke he has very little actual torque or pulling power. Your Case on the other hand is probably only turning 2100 RPM, and you have alot larger bore and longer stroke therefore more down force for a longer time gives you more torque. The old Northwest cranes we work on have Murphy diesels in them which have over 1200CuIn displacements, but depending on model only in the neighborhood of 175 HP, but the torque they produce is enough to be able to run the machine and pull in a 4 yard dragline bucket full of dirt. To use the same comparison you did, the engine in your Case wouldn't be able to do that even though it is actually a higher HP than the Murphy.
To put it in a very easy perspective, just imagine each piece of equipment with a team of horses running it. The snomobile had 180 ponies, your Case has 180 thoroughbreds, but the crane has 175 Clydesdales. I know it's alot more complicated than that, but I don't really understand the technical/mathmatical side of it myself.
