Folks: Here in Canada, Walmart oils are made by a company called Safety Kleen. They are a recycler, picking up oils and antifreeze from garages, quick lube shops, and industries. I saw the name on the boxes when they were stocking the shelves. Recycled oil can be ok when done right, but there are 4 qualities of engine oil, type 1 being the el-cheapo stuff that just meets API standards, but is still higher quality than what our old tractors used 40 or more years ago. Then there is type 2, the standards such as Quaker,Pennzoil, Valvoline, Castrol, you know, the normal stuff. Then there is type 3, the synthetics, Castrol Syntec for one, that really aren't synthetic base stocks, but are much more highly refined, and almost meet real synthetics in terms of quality, then type 4 oils that are built up from real synthetic base stocks, such as Polyalphaolefins, have no mineral oil in them at all. Mobil 1 is one type. These are super performers, the best. In my area, we have an oil refinery, ESSO(Exxon) that makes motor oil for lots of in house brands, it all comes out of the same tank, but is cheaper with a private label on it. The Exxon refinery here makes oils for about 10 different marketers, all the same oil from the same tank. I'm sure somwething similar happens in the U.S. too.
