Tractor horsepower and Lagoon pumps.

I want to use a lagoon pump in an industrial "sludge" application. I have a Calumet 24" pump . Several guys says one needs a 100hp tractor for this type of job. Can i not just pump a little slower and use less horsepower. I have plenty of time and do not need to pump a 6" stream 50 foot thru the air.How about any reliable way to drop pto speed in half say about 270 rpm.Maybe a 3 point drop box at 2:1 Any thoughts???? signed: "Know enough to be dangerous!"
