Sorry Tired, but I was in the engine machine shop business for a couple years & saw this happen a million times. Guy thinks he's doing his badly tapered cylinders a favor by putting in new rings. Just aint the fix it's cracked up to be. No BS here ... if a feller can't afford to get the cylinders right ... he'd be better off leaving the old rings in it. What always pist me off, was, when I would stoop low enough to do one of the so-called "Cheap" rebuilds for a guy ... then it would crack a ring or still smoke like the blazes ... & he would tell people that I did the rebuild ... or even worse ... sell the unit as having a "Fresh" rebuilt engine , done be ME ! Trust me ... I'm no Mr. Moneybags & I've done plenty of shade tree repairs in my time...some that I wasn't too proud of ... some worked out fine.... but I learned the hard way that cylinder walls & rings are not a good place to cheat. The only way I would considder cheating here is if; Sleeves weren't available Walls too thin to bore Oversize pistons/rings N/A Money wasn't available > Then I would leave the cylinder/pistons/rings ALONE ! ~Glenn (no animals were harmed in testing of this post)
