STARTED MY MASSEY/PERKINS FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR!

I needed to bust loose the pile of fire wood that is frozen together so I decided to get the Massey with front loader started for the first time this year. Here in SW OH, the temperature has been hovering between zero and +10 all week and in the pole barn it hasn't been any warmer.

I didn't expect it to start with all the talk about using ether to start cold diesels, but it started in about 3-5 seconds of cranking. This was with no preparation at all - no block warmer, no ether, no glow plugs - just stepped up on the tractor and turned the starter switch.

Ordinarilly, in warm weather it starts as soon as the starter engages and is running before the starter stops spinning.

I wish my gas John Deere would start that easy.

The engine is a Perkins AD4-203. I rebuilt it about 2 years ago and I've used it on my farmette.

When it started, it blew white smoke for about 5 seconds and then cleared up.

This is my first diesel tractor. I've always avoided them in favor of gasoline tractors due to the poor winter starting stories. Do more of you have good starting diesels?

I'm currently rebuilding a CASE D-188 diesel crawler engine. It would be nice if it starts as well as the Perkins.
