NASCAR uses nitrogen instead of plain old air because the nitrogen won't increase tire pressure when heated up in the tire during the race.They make small pressure changes-sometimes measured in ounces-to improve the handling on the cars.Tires using air will heat up unevenly or too much and make a bad situation worse.
Nitrogen is also non-flammable,and it is what they use to run the impact wrenches when making a pit stop,so it's readily available.
The Brickyard is a great race-last year we saw our favorite driver-Bill Elliot-win over Tony Stewart!Had mixed feelings,Tony's from Rushville-30 min. from here and home to one of the best Steam Engine shows in this part of the country (IN).But,Elliot was sponsored by Service Merchandise for a while and that's where my girlfriend managed a few stores for 20 or so years.
