Heat is power being dissipated. That would probably be oil slipping by inside of the pump. That probably indicates a worn pump, but it is also indicative of a restriction elsewhere in the system. Is there a closed center valve on an open center system? A plugged or kinked hose or line, or a valve stuck in a work position with nowhere for the oil to go could be the problem. If there is a blockage which totally stops the pump outlet, and if the pump runs hot but doesn't break itself apart, then it is definitely worn to where it doesn't have high pressure capability, because a good pump will break if it is forced to turn with a blocked outlet.
