Doesn't sound cheaper to me, because I can tell you exactly what similar repairs go for on a Deere. In a 4840 powershift, you can completely replace the clutch pack and brake pack with brand new Deere components for about $6500 or thereabouts for parts, and depending on the technician, labor will probably run you about another $1500 or so, which isn't bad considering you're basically replacing the entire transmission except for the case. If the old components are still serviceable, you can reseal the pistons, replace the disks and plates and replace all the bushings for much less. A good JD in-frame engine overhaul will run you around $6000 to $7000 parts and labor. I just got done overhauling a 4640 where I put $8000 in the engine. That included splitting the tractor to replace the rear seal, rebuilding the head back to factory specs, rebuilding the injection pump and installing rebuilt nozzles, replacing the crank pulley and damper (did the front cover gasket while I was there), rebuilding the water pump, installing a new hydraulic pump coupler and input seal, new pistons and liners, new belts of course, new coolant and all the filters, removing and steaming out the radiator, and the various other little odds and ends that go along with an overhaul. I busted my hump on the job and made pretty good time on it, especially considering that I did quite a bit more than would be done during a normal "in-frame overhaul". Considering that the tractor has 8000 hours on it (most of them at 200 hp out of a tractor rated at 155), I'd say roughly a dollar per engine hour to do an overhaul is pretty reasonable. The original bearings were still in the engine (dated '81) and still looked serviceable and the head only needed the exhaust valves replaced - no seats or guides were necessary, which shows you the benefits of good maintenance. You certainly aren't going to buy ANY kind of 155 horsepower tractor for what I put in that one. I also rebuilt the clutch pack and the torsional damper while I had it split, and completely revamped the A/C system to whip it into shape. Fans of other colors like to brag about how they can repair their tractors for less than Deeres, but when you get down to hard numbers, they normally can't back it up.
