We built a new house a few years ago, and you know what my wife likes most about it? The attached garage with the electric opener and concrete floor. No more window scraping or brushing snow off. And in the summer the inside of the car is not like a furnace when you get in. And attached garage does raise the insurance rate some, but I think it is worth it. There is increased fire risk, but the cost of the drywall firewall is really not that much more than regular drywall. It is required by code in my area, and I would have built the firewall even if it was not required. I would not put a garage in a basement if the basement floor is lower than the ground level of the driveway. I can see a real potential hassle gettin out if there was ice on the driveway ramp, or a real hassle getting stopped going in. And a sloping ramp could bring in a lot of water in a heavy rain or fast snowmelt. I suppose it would be possible to deal with the water problem, but that would add to the expense. You sure don't want to have a wet basement. Ever. Have you considered a regular ground level attached garage? I think it is a better compromise, at least for parking the family car.
