It's all a bit subjective. If a particular engine is turbocharged the power output is usually substantially increased. This will not automatically mean an improvement in efficiency. However, the fact that energy is extracted from waste exhaust gases and then used to increase the effective compression ratio, should mean that the thermodynamic efficiency of the combustion process is increased - but as engine design is always a compromise, the new power output per unit fuel input ratio may not always show an improvement. For comparison of like for like, you probably need to compare an intermediate power output, where the turbo is on boost, with the normally aspirated engine at the same power (higher rpms?), then you should see an improvement in efficiency. Remember the old F1 when 1.5 turboed engines competed with 3 litre naturally aspirated engines? They got enough power from the turbos to easily outrun the bigger engines but had to refuel more often to finish the races. Like I said, all a bit subjective. Regards, RAB

Tractor Hydraulics - The Basics - by Curtis Von Fange. Hydraulics was one of the greatest inventions for helping man compound the work he can do. It’s amazing how a little floor jack can lift tons and tons of weight with just the flick of a handle. What’s even more amazing is that all the principals of hydraulic theory can be wrapped up in such a small package. This same package applies to any hydraulic system from the largest bulldozer to the oldest and smallest tractor. This short series will take a look at the basic layout of a simple hydraul
