I thought of doing the same thing a few months ago and asked for advice on this board. I was going to build a 12-18Hp hydrostatic drive machine with hydraulics to run implements. But after adding up the cost ($5K) I thought I would be better off not doing it and then I built a small 13HP woodchipper instead for about $900. Besides if I would have built my own tractor it wouldnt be worth much after it was completed.
