I didn't by the Boomer, but a friend of mine did. He loves the tractor, and I bought a JD 4600. Either way, I've driven and used the gear drives and the hydro in most all applications. The hydro robs you of a little HP, but I wouldn't trade my hydro for anything. Dealer sold me on the hydro because I was planning on doing a good deal of mowing with my tractor, and you can decrease ground speed without loosing rpms and pto speed. We don't use it for mowing much anymore, but as far as grading, scraping, and loader work, I LOVE THE HYDROSTATIC. It enables you to keep hands on the steering wheel, and lift or loader/hydraulic controls without ever missing a beat.

P.S. If you are thinking about buying a front end loader, a big determing factor between the JD and the Ford/NH, was the way the loader detaches. Happy Shopping!!
