here are my suggestions for what its worth-------- stay away from air cooled engines look for leaks, such as hydraulic fluid from cylinders which raise and lower bucket. check the ram portion of cylinder, (the part that extends from cylinder) to make sure that it is not scored, ie. wear marks from going into and out of cylinder. If ram is smooth and not bent, a seal may fix leak which wouldn't be that costly. Look under loader for leaks. If you can run machine, drive it up to a pile of dirt or other object and see if it will drive into pile and make wheels spin, if wheels spin, the hydrostatic drive should be ok. Turn machine slowly on pavement and listen for strange sounds like the drive chain jumping sprockets. If no pavement, do it on solid ground. I like diesels but a good gas engine is ok if water cooled. This sounds stupid, but look machine over, if it gives you the impression that it was taken care of and not subjected to abuse, that would be a plus. If previous owner didn't take care of outside, he probably didn't take care of inside, such as servicing regularly.
