For your own safety, to avoid extra interest from the law and to get fuel/service/food in the rural French areas. Consider renting a vehicle with Quebec plates,getting an interpitor and only use Canadian peso's. Hostility towards Americans and English only speaking Canadians from provinces west of Quebec is common.
Don't have any firearms,ammo,mace etc in the vehicle when crossing the border. They will search you in places you didn't know you had. And charge you with offences having years of jail time.
