In our case a piece of baling wire got wound around the hub before my Uncle Pat died, so pre-1988. Been using the grease method since then with no appreciable change in the mower. I like the grease/oil method because the grease doesn't get liquid until the box gets warm which is when you need the most lubrication anyway. Based on 6 hour mowing days we re-grease about once every third day but add about a pint of oil every day.
