Lots of confusing comments here.It depends on how we were raised as to how we run our equipment. There is nothing in the world that is made to run wide open all of the time. Even Detroits will not hold together if they are WFO all of the time. Just for thought most 4 stroke cycle diesel engines reach peak horsepoer at about 2100 RPM. Why run it any faster than that? Uses more fuel for less horespower, and more wear on engines. If your machine has a turbo charger it should be run at 1500 RPM or more as much as possible, reason being the tubo does not start spooling well until about 1500, and is not serving its purpose. I agree that lugging an engine is bad no matter what kind it is. It causes excess stress on engine, and driveline components. The best advise is to just keep your engine at the lowest speed possible without lugging it. Theoretically speaking less turns means less wear. Use your best judgement, and do everything in moderation.
