I generally reuse the head gasket if I don't have a new one readily available. I clean the top end using a die grinder and a wire cup brush and wipe all the parts clean with a solvent including the old head gasket. Then I apply a THIN coat of Loctite teflon pipe thread sealer to both sides of the head gasket and retorque the head bolts. Different use for pipe thread sealer but it works well and doesn't stick all the parts together like an adhesive would. I like to use anti-sieze compound to the headbolts also.
