It is a 2 way cylinder. As oil is pumped into one side the oil leaves the other side and goes back into the resevior. In theory, once the system is full you don`t even need a resevior, you should be able to pump oil from one side of the piston to the other. I know it doesn`t actually work that way, as I have had to redo the undresized resevior on a wood splitter I built.
As an aside, I have built 5 or 6 wood splitters and used Barnes pumps on all of them. They do a fine job.
