The condition you describe is pretty normal for an older diesel, and indicates an engine with some wear, but still serviceable. The blue smoke at startup is oil burning, and as the engine heats up and parts expand, the oil burning is reduced, and you get the characteristic black diesel smoke. The only cure is a rebuild, but you can buy a lot of oil for the cost of a rebuild. The next level is more smoke at startup of a lighter color, and continued blue smoke even when warm- and starting gets harder because of reduced compression.
