B has gas in Crankcase

My brothers and I started taking a 48 B apart for a seal that was leaking behind the clutch. We pulled the clutches and retainer seal and bearing. We then drained the oil in the crankcase and when it got down to the end, the oil which was black, was very thin and smelled liked gas. What would this indicate except the gas is getting by the rings on the pistons? Could this gas in crankcase cause the seal bearing and retainer to go bad? This is the first tractor that I have torn down and I would appreciate any help anyone can give, that has done this before. Also, anything else to watch out for? Thanks. Dale
