Firestone and Goodyear have a decent web sites. They list tread bar heights for the R-1,R-1W,R-2 (rice),R-3 and R-4 tires.
Look around for new tires on sale. Often pretty close to the price of "good" used.
I had a sickening feeling one time watching large cracks grow in "good" looking used tires when they were inflated.
