It seems to me that the 550's were factory 12 volt. The smaller 540's started out 6 volts and later were 12 volts. Are you running an alternator (12 volts) conversion or the original generator? I think the generator should say on the tag whether or not it is 6 or 12 volts but I'd say it was factory 12 volts. What exactly do you mean by your reference to the coil being "wired for 6 volts"? A 6 or 12 volt coil would be wired into the system the same. Some might have a resistor before the coil kicking the voltage down to 6 volts but if you have a 12 volt coil that's not necessary. There should be a resistor of that type before the distributor so that only 6 volts is delivered there to the points, otherwise 12 volts can lead to some point burning.
