12V Generator hookup

I have a Allis 53 B that I converted to 12v neg ground. I installed a regular light switch so I don't need info on the original type but the voltage regulator that is mounted to the 12v generator said to hook one post from the regulator to the Amature post on the generator and the other to batt. Here are my questions....1. Does the wire from the regulator go through the amp meter and then over to the + on the battery. 2. Where do you hook the F on the generator to ? I'm guessing to the - on the battery to complete the circuit. 3. I brought the "feed" wire for headlight switch and 12v accessory off the + side of the amp meter. It shows a small discharge when I turn the lights on without the enging running so is this right and will the generator kick in and over ride the drain and still charge the battery ? 4. If something gets hooked up wrong is there a possibility of burning up my regulator? I rebuilt the engine and am still in the put together stage of the tractor so I can't test by running right now. Just want to get it wired right the first time. Thanks for any info, Andy
