As a fan of both Oliver and Moline diesels, which can be a bit difficult to start in cold weather, I use just a "puff" of ether. Consequently, I don't think I've ever used a whole can before the propellant goes south and the contents just sort of drools out the nozzle. At which point, I remove the breather and let it drip into the intake. It still starts the tractors, and some of the cans are several years old.
