You have to make sure cylinder #1 is on the compression stroke. To do this remove the spark plug and have someone turn the engine over as you hold your finger over the sprark plug hole. When air rushes out, you know you are on compression.

Next you need to get #1 on top dead center. You can line up the marks on the flywheel or use a piece of wire to feel the piston traveling up and down in the cylinder.

When the piston is at TDC, install the distributor so the rotor points to the #1 terminal on the dist. cap. You'll have to set the timing with a timing light once you have it running again.
