My take on the situation is like most of the others who've responded. While I don't live in the country (yet), I have 65 acres 6 1/2 miles off the highway, where I "play" with my tractor, feed deer, and camp on weekends. There's a "no trespassing" sign on the gate, and when I'm there, the gate is open. People KNOW if they're visiting, or trespassing. Visitors are always welcome, trespassers are subject to be shot. A visitor will introduce himself, a trespasser will pull the kind of crap you're talking about. I would act accordingly.
