A small inside dog will quickly learn to alert you(bark) at the slightest unusual sounds. They're much better than a large dog this way. For outside, consider guinea's, they are the best to sound the alarm of any animals. If you buy a large vicious dog with the intention of nailing the guy(as he should be) you may open your family to a lawsuit if someone is bitten or mauled.
