Dennis; I am fairly sure that the 1954 400 came with 12V from the factory. I have a 1956 400, has 12V and as far as I know it's stock. I also have a 1954 SMTA that has a 12V and I think it came that way stock from the factory. Anyway, hope this helps. Good Luck! Ernie Bob
