If it is belching black smoke, then it is definitely running rich. The question is why? A broken mag spring could retard the spark enough to do it, but my money is on the fuel system someplace. First of all check to make sure the float valve is shutting off completely. I don't have the proper float level for you, but try lowering the float and see if it improves. It may be a blocked intake, simply unhook the air supply at the carb and see if that does it. Dan
