Starter on My Tractor

OK heres one for you elecrical wizards on tractors. I have had this old Earthmaster tractor for years and it use to start up and run great. Well it sat for a couple years now and the starter turned slow so I took it out, took it apart and cleaned it up, put it back together and it runs strong but now it turns the wrong way, even if I switch the leads, it turns opposite of what its suppose to turn and does not allow the bendix drive to kick in right plus it would not roll the engine the proper way if it did. Whats up?????
