It can be very serious. Depending on what you were doing at the time. If you were caught on our property without permission. We would own a nice ATV and you would probably be going to jail. (Dad is a law enforcement officer.) Years ago, when me and my 2 brothers were kids, we used to play army back out in "the acres" of our farm. There would usually be a couple of neighbor friends over as well.

Dad had the property WELL posted about No hunting/trespassing etc. Well, to make a long story short. One day while playing army with a few of our friends. Me and my brother and a friend were shot at by a couple of hunters who THOUGHT they were shooting something else. We were of course wearing drab colors and blended in with the woods pretty well. None of us got hurt in the incident, but the sound of buckshot flying overhead and bouncing off trees was scary enough. We yelled at the direction of the shot. My brother took off running toward the barns about 1/2 mile away to get dad. A few minutes later, these two guys come walking up with shotguns.. Oh, they were apologetic. Me and my friend proceeded to berate them about how stupid they were that they could have killed one of us. They acted like we were the ones at fault, hiding in the weeds/woods like we were. I told them they should not be on this property anyway. Their comment was they were hunting along the river bank and they were free to do so.

It was then that Dad came driving up on the tractor with my brother. He asked them for their names and where they lived. (Both city folk.) As well as what they were doing. Hunting muskrats.. He then informed the two gentlemen that they were on private property and asked them who gave them permission to be there. They repeated the statement they made to me and my friend about the river bed, etc. Dad informed them that, no that was not the case. They then started to stammer about the neighbor farmer giving them permission. Dad pulled out his cell phone and said, "let's call and see". Boy did these two guys start to back pedal. Dad then asked them to vacate the property immediately. One of them gave dad some lip as he turned to walk away. Dad said nothing.. As soon as they were heading back the direction they had come. Dad called the sheriff's dispatcher on his phone and had them send a cruiser over to where he thought these two had probably parked. We all then got up on the tractor and went back toward the barn all talking about how lucky we had been.

Dad then went and got into his unmarked sheriff's car and went looking for these two. In the meantime. A deputy had located a pick-up parked up on the side of the road by the bridge about 2 miles away. Dad meet him there. They looked over the vehicle through the windows and noticed a few things out of the ordinary. One was an open container of beer, a no no here in this state. The other was what appeared to be drug paraphenalia. When the two guys finally came out of the woods. They recognized dad and he said their jaws just dropped. They also saw his partner there as well. Needless to say, there were many more questions asked and in the end, two people ended up going to jail.

Not for trespassing, but for illegal drugs...lol. I think they both got a year in the slammer. It could have been worse, for everyone.

The moral of the story here is.. Stay off private property.. You do not know who you are dealing with.. Secondly, its posted for a reason. Kids playing, etc.

Today's Featured Article - Show Coverage: Godfrey, Illinois Country Days - by Cindy Ladage. Except for last fourth of July's Old Gold show in Springfield, Illinois, I don't remember when it was so hot. Nevertheless, the heat didn't keep vendors and visitors alike from enjoying the third annual Country Day's Event. Jane Elliott said the event was originally a one man show. "Barry Seiler, owner of Country Town Farm Supply store used to invite people up to the Johne Deere store. He would give hats and a free meal for everyone that brings a tractor." Elliott said while this ... [Read Article]
