Electrical problem on Massey

I have a 230 Massey Ferguson. I am having an electrical problem. The amp gauge stays in the middle when running. If I turn the lights on, it shows a discharge. I have had the alternator checked etc. I have a service manual but it doesn't show how to wire the back of the amp gauge. I think it is wired incorrectly (Hot battery wire to discharge side and all other wires to charge side). It ran good all summer. Then a diode burned out on the alternator. Can an amp gauge read wrong? How to wire the back of the amp gauge?
