Joe, A torque converter has a set of variable pitched fins called a stator setting between the two sets of main fins, which allows the speed of the rotation to gradually change the torque of the driven side by that of the drive side. A fluid coupler doesn't have this stater and relies more on a "shearing motion of the oil" to make or break its connection between the two sides. A fluid coupler is more of an on/off connector which is depending on speed of rotation. Allan
