Forgive my ignorance here, because I am not familiar with your engine. However, from your description, I'm assuming that you are working on a two piece wick seal?

Once the seal is worked down into the grooves, use a razor blade to peal 'er off flush with the cap & block and make sure there are no little 'strands' between the two matching metal surfaces (holding them apart).

The nice part about these types of seals is that you can replace 'em very easily.

If this isn't the type of seal you are dealing with, please disregard as I am totally guessing about your animal.
