Allan, It would appear to me that the reason you lost traction is because there isn't enough wt on the rear end to keep it on the ground, Uh, I mean snow! If I recal the pic you posted of your ol darlin, it only had one wt/ wheel. Add one or two extra during the winter months. That snow gets as heavy as any soil you have ever moved.
Or perhaps Load the tires if they arn't already.
Anyway, it is a thought.
