Shep has you heading in the right direction. I've got an 87 Mercury car...302...does exactly what you've described, and it doesn't start because the fuel pump doesn't build up pressure. I've even got a jumper wire cliped on the wires by the relay, so if I have to, I simply jump the fuel pump relay and turn the fuel pump on. On mine, there are 3 relays on the left (drivers side) I've never been able to find a wiring diagram to know what they are for sure, one is for the fuel pump and one is for the AC and the other one I don't know. Whatever the case, do just what Shep said and I'll bet it will start. I've thought that its a problem with the key switch not sending power to the relay to activate it, but I'm too lazy to change out the switch, and it only happens occasionally, and its just an old beater to drive to work.
