I don't understand how the bank can immediately debit the payer's checking account and credit the funds to your account. The check has to go thru a clearing house and back to the payer's bank before it's known good or bad. And YOU also can call the payer's bank to verify funds... if you have the bank phone number. Banks don't want to be bothered with that, so most don't put their phone number on checks. I have been to stores lately that accept a check, run it thru an electronic gizmo, and hand it back. Walmart is one. Maybe the funds are transferred at that moment. It won't be long before checks won't be accepted at all. Happy New Year....
