I sold some engines for quite a sizeable amount to a guy from some distance away (but within the state). I had heard of him previously, and he seemed to have a good reputation. AFTER he left with the engines, I decided to call his bank, and verify funds because I intended to deposit the check and needed to use the funds ASAP. The bank phone number on the check was disconnected, and directory assistance had no information. In desparation, I called the Postmaster in that town. I was told that bank had been bought out by a bank in another town. I called the other bank and was told "yes, we honor the checks from Bank "X" we purchased, and, yes, Mr. "Smith" is as good as gold. The check went through with no problems, but my heart rate sure went up for a while!
