IH 240 steering

Does anyone know if there is an adjustment in the casting of a 240 {identical to a 230, 200 Super C etc.} to tighten the "slop" in the steering of this tractor. It would appear that the steering shaft that enters the casting at the end of the steering column would turn a ring gear by turning a worm gear.We have some play in the column that is only a % of the slop, and I can't remove the large cap nut on the front of the machine. Thanks.
