I say first it depends on the tractor your trying to start, Like my 35JD-B I use high range low, but if I'm trying to start my ford I use standard range 3rd, it has 12 speeds by the way. But any how use a higher gear because the engine will turn over easyer in a higher gear and less likely to slid the tires/wheels on the ground, but not to high so if it starts you don't run over the tow tractor.
