Even if you run a distributor ignition you can run on a battery for quite a while. We run a 4 cylinder continal engine on a cordwood saw/log splitter for several days at a time and it doesn't have a generator. Have seen several different tractors run this way too. You just need to charge the battery once in a while. If it is very cold I would chage it each 6 to 12 hours, if a magneto, well maybe doulble that as you only use the battery for starting. If you ae running a mag and no generator you can just put a 12 volt battery in, and you will like how fast it turns over. If you are running a distrubutor you should put a resistor in the wire to the coil to reduce the voltage to about 9 volts. You can get these,I think still,cars used to use them. On the other hand it takes a longtime to burn the points with 12 volts, too. Maybe because of not having a generator in the system the voltage isn't as high.
